A 94-year-old woman managed to escape a blaze at her Timperley flat this morning after being alerted by her smoke alarm.

Fifteen firefighters and three fire engines from Sale, Stretford and Wythenshawe fire stations attended the flat in Mayfair Court off Park Road at 10.23 this morning after a fire broke out in the bedroom of the ground-floor flat.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was “well developed” by the time firefighters wearing breathing apparatus arrived and required the use of a jet inside and outside the flat to extinguish it.

The spokesperson said: “Thankfully the lady managed to self-rescue herself after being alerted by her smoke alarm. The fire had been seen by a window cleaner who called the fire brigade, but she managed to get out at the same time as he was making the call.”

The lady was assessed by paramedics at the scene but wasn’t taken to hospital. She is now staying with relatives.

It’s not known how the fire started, but it broke out in the bedroom and firefighters were at the scene for just over two hours.

The fire service reported that there was heavy fire damage to the bedroom, with the rest of the property heavily smoke damaged.
