A woman has died after a horror accident involving a lorry brought Altrincham to a standstill this evening.

Police have confirmed that the woman, aged in her late twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident happened at around 5.15pm.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 5.15pm to reports that a lorry had collided with a woman on Dunham Road. She was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“The lorry driver stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made at this time. Investigations are ongoing.”

Eyewitnesses report seeing a truck, which was carrying barrier equipment, drive down Dunham Road with its metal support arm outstretched. Police have not yet confirmed this.

At least 11 police and ambulance vehicles were in attendance at the height of the incident and an air ambulance was also spotted overhead.

Police cordoned off the entire area, closing off a large stretch of Dunham Road at rush-hour, as well as Groby Place and High Street.

The truck involved in the incident lay abandoned at the top of Groby Place.

Traffic routes in and out of Altrincham continue to be majorly affected by the incident.

A large stretch of Dunham Road between Market Street and Regent Road is closed off and is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day while police continue their investigations on the scene.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if at all possible.

In a separate incident causing further town centre gridlock, a collision between two cars – one of which was a police car – led to Barrington Road being closed off, only a few hundred yards from the Dunham Road incident.
