Four men brandishing machetes or axes held up an Altrincham jewellers in a brazen midday robbery today.

Police have begun a manhunt for four men who wore jumpsuits and balaclavas as they stormed into David M Robinson on Railway Street shortly before 12.25pm.

The men, who escaped with a “quantity” of jewellery, escaped in a black Land Rover Discovery in the direction of Regent Road.

The car was later found abandoned on Ashworth Close in Bowdon.

Eyewitnesses at the scene also reported seeing a John Lewis van that was used to block off traffic at the junction with Railway Street, although police have not confirmed this.

The area around the jewellers was typically busy at the time of the attack, with many cars and pedestrians around. People congregrating outside the hospital, directly opposite the jewellers, were seen being bundled back inside as the incident unfolded.

It’s not thought that any staff were injured but they were said to be “distraught” by one eyewitness.

The jewellers was previously targeted in July 2010, when thieves drove a black Volvo into the front of the store and stole a number of Rolex watches.

Anyone with information as to their whereabouts should call police on 101, or where there is an immediate threat, dial 999.
