A voluntary organisation that calls for the introduction of a 20mph speed limit for residential roads has launched an Altrincham campaign.

Daniel Jerrome, who is leading the campaign in the town, is calling for mandatory 20mph speed limits on all streets where people live that are currently 30mph.

It’s all part of a national movement called 20’s Plenty for Us, which claims a drop to 20mph would lead to a 95% reduction in risk for walkers and cyclists as well as “less pollution, less noise, less fear and a better quality of life”.

He said: “Not only have I seen cars driving fast on residential roads, but many people have told me that they’ve seen the same.

“I just felt we had to fight for change on our roads. That’s why we launched our campaign with a petition and we urge people to sign up and support us for safer, cleaner roads.”

The petition can be found here.

The campaign says that over 15 million are already committed to 20 mph residential limits in places like Oxford, Newcastle, Warrington and Bristol, and that in the two years since 94% of Portsmouth’s roads went 20 mph there have been 22% fewer casualties.

Implementing the change would cost around £2 per person, the campaign claims.

Anna Semlyen, Campaign Manager for 20’s Plenty for Us, said: “I am delighted to help 20’s Plenty for Altrincham’s launch. They join over 120 grass roots campaigns around the country all saying 20’s Plenty where people live. Please get in touch to find out more, join for free or to help.“
