Bowdon junction of M56 will close for four weeks from tomorrow

The Bowdon junction of the M56 is to close for four weeks from tomorrow in what will be the most significant disruption yet caused by the A556 bypass project.

The Bowdon junction of the M56 is to close for four weeks from tomorrow in what will be the most significant disruption yet caused by the A556 bypass project.

The closure of Junction 8 will take effect from 9pm on Monday, September 21st. It had been due to take effect from last Monday but the closure was put back by heavy rain last month.

The month-long closure is for work to refurbish the Chester Road bridge, which carries the A556 and start of the slip road over the motorway.

It’s all part of Highways England’s creation of a new £192m bypass joining the M56 with the M6. The new four-mile road is intended to alleviate traffic on the A556 and is planned to open in early 2017.

Drivers looking to access the westbound M56 can use junction 6 at Hale or use the official diversion, joining the westbound M56 from the M6 at Lymm Interchange via the A56 through Lymm, A50 to junction 20 of the M6 and southbound M6 to the interchange.

The A556 will also be closed overnight, in both directions, between Bowdon Roundabout and Bucklow Hill between Friday 18st September and Friday 2nd October, with no closures planned on Saturday or Sunday nights.

And Cherry Tree Lane will close at its junction with the southbound A556 for around six months from 9pm on Monday 21st September, with a clearly signed diversion in place.

Jonathan Stokes, Project Manager at Highways England, said: “These are scheduled closures for key elements of the improvements we are making to the existing northern section of the A556 to accommodate the new dual carriageway.

“Clearly signed diversions will be in place during each of the closures and we would like to thank drivers and local people for their continued patience and support.”
