Council proposing to keep 20p basic parking rate – but you’ll get half an hour less

There’s set to be another change in parking charges in Altrincham – and it’s good and bad news.

Half-hour stays would be reduced to 20p under council proposals

There’s set to be another change in parking charges in Altrincham – and it’s good and bad news.

Trafford Council has launched the second phase of its budget consultation for 2016-17 – and has proposed an adjustment to the cost of parking throughout the borough. As recently as June it doubled parking charges throughout the borough.

Currently, parking fees in Trafford are 1 hour for 20p, 2 hours for 60p, 3 hours for £1, 4 hours for £2, and day parking for £3 (£2 on-street).

The council is proposing to keep the basic parking rate at 20p – but reduce the minimum time from 60 minutes to half an hour.

The two-hour rate would be reduced from 60p to 50p, and there would be no change to the three-hour and four-hour rates in car parks.

Day rates would go up to £4 (and £3 on-street).

Additionally, the council is proposing to charge in Balmoral Road car park for the first time. Motorists would get the first two hours free but all-day parking would cost £1.

The changes are all linked to £33m of cuts the council must make over the next two years – in addition to the £96m it has already had to save since 2010.

People can comment on these and other proposals at seven public meetings to be held before Christmas.

The first is at Altrincham Town Hall on Tuesday November 24th, between 6 and 8pm, with a further opportunity at the town hall on Saturday December 5th, between 10am and 12pm.

People can submit comments online at www.trafford.gov.uk/budget from November 17th until December 16th.
