There are long delays on the M56 this morning after a tanker spilled 500 litres of bleaching agent in a crash near the Four Seasons roundabout at Hale Barns.

Two lanes of the westbound carriageway are currently closed after the HGV was involved in a collision with a car at around 8am.

No-one was injured in the incident, but a quantity of hydrogen peroxide – commonly used as a bleach and disinfectant and highly flammable – leaked onto the road and hard shoulder between junction 5 for Manchester Airport and junction 6 for the Four Seasons roundabout.

Police, fire and traffic officers are on the scene and work is ongoing to clear the spillage.

The tanker was carrying a total of 1,000 litres, half of which has spilled.

It’s the second successive day of traffic chaos in the area after the congestion caused by the Manchester Airport jobs fair yesterday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said that a crew from Wythenshawe and a specialist hazardous materials unit were scrambled to the scene at 8.01am.
