Subject to securing planning permission, it will see a state-of-the-art terminal building created through the expansion of the airport’s existing Terminal Two building.

Managing director Ken O’Toole, who unveiled the video at the UK Northern Powerhouse Conference at Manchester Central, said the project will give the whole of the North the “global gateway it deserves”.

The new terminal should actually be ready by 2023, with improvements noticeable as early as 2019. Terminal One, which was built in 1962, will be phased out by 2022 and it’s hoped that 55 million passengers will use the hub by 2050 – more than doubling the current 23 million.
