Plans submitted to give former McDonald’s a makeover

A planning application to completely refurbish the old McDonald’s restaurant on Stamford New Road – one of the biggest eyesores in Altrincham town centre – has been submitted to Trafford Council

A planning application to refurbish the old McDonald’s restaurant on Stamford New Road – one of the biggest eyesores in Altrincham town centre – has been submitted to Trafford Council.

As exclusively revealed by Altrincham Today last month, Stamford Quarter owner Lunar has decided to invest a sum likely to be in the hundreds of thousands in order to bring the now condemned site back into use. The old McDonald’s closed down nine years ago.

The application has been submitted on Lunar’s behalf by the Manchester office of JLL, a professional services firm specialising in real estate services and investment management.

The application proposes to strip out the current building and leave it as a shell “until a tenant is found”.

Property consultant Barker Proudlove is currently advertising the site for rent, describing it as being “undoubtedly one of the most prominent within the town centre”. The total floor space within the former McDonald’s is around 4,500 sq ft.

A heritage statement from BB Heritage Studio accompanying the application said: “The proposed works which are the subject of this application consist of essential works to ensure that 48-50 Stamford New Road can be brought back into commercial use.

“They include proposals to carefully repair the existing fabric using appropriate techniques and the provision of a new shop front, removing the inappropriate shop front installed in the 1980’s.”
