Trafford Housing Trust and Wates Living Space Homes have commenced plans to redevelop the 1.4-hectare plot in West Timperley, which has earned a reputation as a local eyesore and been subject to numerous acts of vandalism and arson attacks.

Work can now begin on 33 family homes and 29 apartments – 20 three-bed, 11 four-bed and two five-bed houses, with a further 12 one-bed and 17 two-bed apartments – which are set for completion next summer.

The development, which will be marketed under the Laurus Homes brand, will be named Stonebrook.

Trafford councillor Stephen Anstee, whose Broadheath ward includes the Bayer site, said: “I am delighted to see the excellent plans for this site now coming to fruition. The building has been an eyesore for far too long and a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour. The new homes will be a fantastic addition to the area and will also help bring more investment into this part of Altrincham.”

A planning application was unanimously approved by Trafford Council for the site last November.

At the time, Trafford Housing Trust said it would “seek to create a high quality place which builds on the character of the surrounding neighbourhood”.

Access to the development will be via Etchells Road and will require the creation of a new bridge over Timperley Brook.

Larry Gold, director of Laurus Homes, said: “The Bayer building has for many years been a blot on the Trafford landscape and gives a bad impression of the area. Getting started on our plans for Stonebrook means that we can begin to create a modern, accessible and desirable residential scheme which will elevate the whole neighbourhood, providing much needed new housing and apartments in the process.

“The Stonebrook scheme is another great example of how we are delivering new homes in areas like Timperley but with profits set to be used to build other types of badly needed housing across the whole of the borough.”
