Twenty-three volunteers braved the cold and rain on Sunday to collect litter from around Altrincham neighbourhoods with community group Our Altrincham.

Each volunteer averaged 11,000 steps on their litter picking route, which totalled 253,000 steps around Altrincham and a total of 74 collected bags of litter.

Sarah Walmsley, of Our Altrincham, said: “This is the first of our planned litter picks for 2017 and the response from volunteers has been amazing. 74 bags of litter is an incredible amount of litter to be removed from the streets of Altrincham, with the added benefit of improving the health and wellbeing of our wonderful volunteers.”

“Considering the miserable weather, volunteers of all ages and abilities decided to give up their free time to make a real positive impact in Altrincham. It was also humbling that members of the public were stopping our volunteers and passing on their thanks and praise for their work in the community.”

The next litter pick is planned for Sunday 19th March – anyone interested in helping out should email sarahw@ouraltrincham.org for more information.
