It’s one of the highlights of the local calendar this Sunday, with around 16,000 runners expected to compete in the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon.

Starting and finishing close to Old Trafford, the event will as in previous years pass through Timperley and Altrincham.

We’ve collated all the relevant information so you can plan your day.

Where to see the runners

As in previous years, the runners will first hit Timperley after running the length of Brooklands Road. They’ll then turn up Stockport Road and make their way through Timperley village before joining up with Woodlands Road and hitting Altrincham town centre.

Runners will then do a circular route through Altrincham, turning down Stamford New Road, past the Clock Tower, before turning right up Regent Road on to Market Street and past Altrincham Market. The route then heads down Post Office Street and Stamford Street before rejoining Woodlands Road and Stockport Road. This year, runners will run the length of Park Road in Timperley before joining up with Washway Road and off into Sale.

Here’s the Altrincham and Timperley part of the route:

Timings

The event gets underway at 9am and will take in Sale, Brooklands, Timperley, Altrincham, Urmston and Stretford. The majority of runners are likely to be coming through Altrincham between 10am and 12pm.

Road closures

A number of roads in Altrincham and Timperley will be closed for the duration of the event, including Stockport Road, Park Road, Thorley Lane, Stamford New Road, Barrington Road, Regent Road, Market Street and Stamford Street.

There’s a route change this year that will mean Park Road in Timperley will be closed off – here’s more information for residents in that area.

Full details about the closures can be found here.

Entertainment

Runners and spectators at the event will be treated to an impressive line-up of local bands, singers and entertainers, as well as additional cheering points along the route where charities and sponsors will be cheering runners on.

The en route entertainment gives the local community a perfect opportunity to get involved in the excitement of race day, whilst providing valuable encouragement to the runners at key points along the course.

In Altrincham, Little Belters children’s choir – featuring children aged 5-11 – will take prime position again on Market Street between 10.30 and 12, where they will perform a repertoire of toe-tapping, upbeat songs to motivate the runners towards the finishing line.
