A driver is understood to have fallen ill at the wheel before veering down an embankment in Timperley last evening.

Police said that the grey BMW collided with a Ford Focus before driving across the pavement and grassy verge and through a fence. The car ended up just yards from a garden.

The accident happened on Shaftesbury Avenue, close to the Brooklands roundabout, at 5.30pm.

A spokesman for GMP said the 32-year-old man suffered “no serious injuries” and was conscious at the scene.

Emergency services attended while the man was treated before the car was winched out. There was severe rush-hour congestion in the area as a result.
