Roy Keane is to be the star guest at a sportsman’s dinner to raise money for the Altrincham FC Community Sports Hall.

The former Manchester United captain will take part in an interview session and a Q&A at the event, to take place at the Moss Lane venue on Friday September 18th.

Robins chairman Grahame Rowley said that almost half the tables had already been sold, only a day after tickets went on sale.

He added that the initial approach to Keane had been made by the manager of one of the club’s junior sides, for whom Keane’s son plays.

“People forget that money is still outstanding on the sports hall and it’s hard to fundraise for something that’s already built,” he said.

“We needed to have a big fundraiser so we had a brainstorm and came up with the idea of approaching Roy. The manager of his son’s team made the approach and I was absolutely delighted to hear that he was happy to do it.

“He’s not just going to nip in either – he’s told us he’s happy to stay as long as we want.”

The £750,000 hall was officially opened by Keane’s former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in December and is a well-used space for everything from yoga classes to Slimming World. Although the majority of the funds was secured through grants, there’s still an outstanding amount which the club must cover.

The hall holds a capacity of 200, with tickets available at £40 and a table of eight priced at £300. Tickets are available by calling 0161 928 1045 or emailing sportshall@altrinchamfootballclub.co.uk.
