Improvement works in Goose Green are now “close to completion” as the first phase of efforts to transform Altrincham town centre continues.

Works on Shaw’s Road, George Street and Cross Street are also well under way.

In Goose Green, Yorkstone paving has now been laid around all building frontages, as well as segmental arched paving across the centre of the square.

“Appropriately sized” trees and lighting will be installed later this month, while the geese statue will be relocated to the side of the square.

Work to the top of Cross Street began in mid-May and is now well on track, with concrete nearing completion and some Yorkstone paving already in place.

Works on adjacent George Street have encountered a small delay following the discovery of an unforeseen defect in a United Utilities sewer. Urgent remedial work will be carried out by United Utilities to resolve this issue and ensure that delay to the overall project is limited to one week.

Phase one also includes Stamford New Road (in front of the new Interchange) with work here scheduled to take place in the autumn.

The works form part of a wider £6m project to transform key routes through Altrincham town centre.

Councillor Michael Young, Executive Councillor for Economic Growth and Planning and Altrincham Forward board member, said: “After many months of planning and hard work, it is exciting to see the improvements to the public realm in Altrincham now coming to fruition.

“Much emphasis has been placed on making sure this is a high quality, durable scheme, and with sections of the paving now in place, we can really see the start of the transformation.’

Anthony Prophet, co-owner of Traders Tiki and the Green Room, added: “We are delighted with the progress of improvements to Goose Green. The short term disruption will be well worth the end result, which will transform the square into a fantastic urban park and build on its reputation as the real leisure hub of Altrincham. Enhanced seating areas and the potential for increased capacity should make for a very successful second half of the summer for Goose Green businesses.”
