Reopening date for Bowdon M56 junction revealed as Highways England thanks drivers

The Bowdon junction of the M56 is to finally reopen by Monday, December 14th, almost three months after it was closed as part of the work to build a bypass between the M56 and M6.

The Bowdon junction of the M56 is to finally reopen by Monday, December 14th, almost three months after it was closed as part of the work to build a bypass between the M56 and M6.

The reopening will bring an end to a painful period for motorists in the area who have been forced to access the westbound M56 by either joining up at the Hale Barns junction or by navigating through a diversion via Lymm.

Highways England had originally planned to close the junction for just four weeks from September 21st, but the discovery of an “uncharted water pipe” provided an unexpected delay.

The end is now in sight – but not before a further closure. In order to allow for all the traffic management equipment to be removed, the southbound A556 from Bowdon roundabout to Bucklow Hill will be closed overnight – from 9pm to 5am – for three nights from Wednesday December 9th.

Jonathan Stokes, Project Manager at Highways England, said: “We would like to thank drivers for their patience and understanding during the slip road closure while we’ve been refurbishing the bridge on the A556.

“We are moving along quickly with works and drivers will be able to see the road taking shape as the various bridges are being erected over the next six months.”

Construction work on the new link road – which will bypass most of the existing route – began in November last year and is due to be completed in early 2017.
