Altrincham is set to be as warmer than the Costa del Sol and the Algarve this weekend as a mini heatwave brings a welcome end to winter.

Temperatures are predicted to soar into the mid-20s on Sunday and Monday, with the Met Office forecasting highs of 25 degrees in the Manchester area.

That represents an increase of more than 10 degrees over the normal temperature expected at this time of year, of 14 degrees.

By contrast, usual hotspots around the Continent will be “shivering” – with weekend temperatures of 17 degrees in Barcelona, 18 in Faro and 22 in Milan.

A Met Office spokesman told us: “On Saturday there’s a chance of some thundery downpours but also a good deal of sunshine. Temperatures in the Manchester area, with the warm air pushing up from the South East, will be in the region of 20 and 22 degrees Celsius.

“The showers should die out through Saturday evening and it will be largely a fine day with lots of sunshine on Sunday and even warmer than Saturday, with highs in the Manchester area of 24 Celsius, possibly 25.

“As we go through into Monday, we’re holding on to generally fine conditions, but it will begin to cloud over in the afternoon. It will still be pretty warm though, with temperatures between 23 and 25 degrees, a marked change from what we have been experiencing recently.”
