Exclusive CCTV footage has revealed the moment an 86-year-old thwarted an attempted robbery in an Altrincham supermarket yesterday with the help of a frozen packet of bacon.

The elderly woman had drawn an amount believed to be around £250 from Lloyds Bank on Stamford New Road and then walked around the corner to Iceland on George Street.

The footage above shows a middle-aged woman in sunglasses and a dark red bag who hovered close to the pensioner before pouncing, demanding she hand over the cash in her bag.

The offender grabbed the victim’s shopping trolley and attempted to get inside to steal what is thought to be her pension.

The victim is seen to grab hold of her trolley and land a parting shot at the woman – dressed all in white or cream – with a frozen pack of bacon.

The offender leaves empty-handed and the 86-year-old appeared to simply carry on with her shopping.

Police confirmed however that she was “very shook up” by the incident, and have asked anyone with information to call them on 101.
