Altrincham and the Greater Manchester region could be hit by snow showers later this week, the Met Office has today warned.

A yellow warning of wind and snow has been issued for the North West region – including Greater Manchester and Cheshire West and Chester – with snow showers “expected to develop from Wednesday evening lasting into Thursday”.

The Arctic blast, which originated in Canada, will be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 55mph.

The Met Office says that between 2 and 5cm of snow could accumulate anywhere within the warning area, with 10-20 cm possible above 300m.

There’s a further warning covering Cheshire West and Chester for Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, with more snow showers forecast.

Temperatures will also be plunging below freezing this week.

Oli Clayton, a Met Office forecaster, said: “There is certainly a chance of snow. There is a change in weather patterns happening on Wednesday.

“It will get colder on Wednesday due to arctic air from the North West. There will be flurries of showers from the North West, that could be slightly wintry.

“It is best to keep an eye out later in the week to see where exactly it could snow.

“The further North West the more likely there is a chance of snow.”
