Altrincham Synchro Club is celebrating one of the best ever seasons in its 11-year history, returning home from the British Championships with not one, but two trophies to display at its home rink in Altrincham.
The ‘Britannia Cup’ is the most prestigious competition in the synchronised skating calendar, with clubs travelling from all corners of Great Britain to take part.
Altrincham Synchro Club took three teams to the event at Sheffield Arena.
Bladerunners fought off competition from 11 rival adult teams to win gold, Twizzles, the club’s newest and youngest team, brought home its second gold of the season, and Whizz Kids wowed the judges to secure silver.
All three teams will perform their routines on Sunday 12th June at a gala held at the rink. The programme, which runs from 4-5pm and showcases local skating talent, will also include a performance from Advanced Novice British Figure Skating Champion Rene Bektashi-Brown. Entry is £3 on the door.
Head Coach Sam Ozard said: “It’s been a tough couple of years for our skaters – rink closures during the pandemic massively disrupted training schedules and meant we had to practice routines at home on Zoom and in car parks.
“It is testament to their hard work and dedication that they have come back from this even stronger. They have absolutely smashed it and I am so very proud.”
Sam, a former British Junior medalist and GB International competitor, is an experienced and inspirational synchronised ice skating coach. She gives her all and expects her skaters to work hard too – all teams train weekly, some of them at 6am in the morning before the rink opens to the public.
Altrincham Synchro Club is currently holding tryouts for new members, and anyone interested who is a proficient skater should fill out this form.
“We run teams for all ages, from children as young as six through to adults, and varying abilities,” added Ozard.
“We love to excel in competitions but our primary aim is to help our skaters achieve their potential through practice and to promote team spirit. It is wonderful to witness the friendships that develop as the teams grow and flourish.”
