Above: The scene inside Abi’s living room in Timperley last night
For most people, having your favourite band play in your front room is a dream that never comes true.
But for one Timperley teenager, last night it did.
Music promoter Abi Richardson, who normally puts on gigs at The Cinnamon Club, offered her parents’ own living room as the venue for a very exclusive performance from Jon McClure, lead singer of Sheffield band Reverend and The Makers.
Abi, 19, explained: “He’s running a competition on Twitter where if you nominate your house and encourage your friends to pre-order their new album, he might pick you and come and play in your house.
“I got a message from him on Tuesday that I’d won and that he would come round on Thursday at 9pm, and he did.”
Around 30 people were crammed into the room for the event, which began with an exclusive screening of a new DVD that’s included with the band’s new album Mirrors, which comes out next month, before McClure played a raucous acoustic set.
Known as ‘Rev’, McClure is well known in the industry for playing impromptu gigs, whether other private homes or the car park of the band’s gig venues.
The Makers formed 10 years ago and have one top 10 hit under their belts – “Heavyweight Champion of the World” – and supported Oasis on their final tour.
Abi said the experience was “really cool”. “It was a bit mental and there was even a bit of crowd-surfing,” she said, “but he spoke to all of us and couldn’t have been nicer. Proper Northern charm.”
And as for the parents? “They were stood on the sofa bouncing around with everyone else!”
