An “extremely funny” play focusing on the intimate relationship between Carry On stars Sid James and Barbara Windsor is to open at the Altrincham Garrick next week.
Terry Johnson’s sharp, biographical play Cleo, Camping, Emmannuelle and Dick will run at the Barrington Road theatre between Monday November 25th and Saturday November 30th.
Focussing on the events during the making of four Carry On films, it is extremely funny, touching and ultimately tragically sad as the lives of these icons of British comedy are put under the theatrical microscope.
The Garrick has assembled a cast including Steven Finney, who played Edmund Blackadder in the acclaimed version of Blackadder Goes Forth last year, Mark Butt, who played Bernadette in the fabulous production of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert and Dawn Flint, who played Rose in Gypsy.
It premiered at the National Theatre in 1998 and won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. When adapted for television, the play was renamed Cor Blimey because ITV thought the original title too misleading and cumbersome.
Director Charlie Tomlinson said: “Be prepared to howl with laughter throughout the play, but have a tissue ready at the end.”
