Altrincham artist to compete on Sky Arts' Landscape Artist of the Year

The programme will air next month.

An Altrincham artist will appear on television screens next month after being selected to compete in the new series of Landscape Artist of the Year.

Amanda Mulquiney will represent the North West in Heat 5 of the popular Sky Arts competition, which sees artists from across the UK battle it out to capture Britain's most striking locations in just four hours.

The oil painter, whose work focuses on capturing people in places such as cafés, bars and travel-inspired scenes, filmed her heat aboard HMS Wellington, a Second World War battleship moored on the River Thames.

"It's one of the most intense painting experiences you can imagine," Amanda said. "Four hours, no second chances, and an extraordinary setting."

Hosted by Stephen Mangan, the series challenges competitors to paint under pressure while hoping to impress judges Tai Shan Schierenberg, Kathleen Soriano and new judge Eva Langret.

The winner of each heat progresses to the semi-final, with the overall champion receiving a £10,000 commission to create a landscape of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo for the National Gallery of Ireland.

Amanda's episode airs on Wednesday 11th February on Sky Arts. The new series begins on Wednesday 14th January.

Amanda is an award-winning artist and Central Saint Martins graduate whose oil paintings capture contemporary figures set against rich, atmospheric backdrops. Her work draws inspiration from artists including Klimt and Jonathan Yeo, and she has exhibited at events including the Manchester Buy Art Fair. Locally, she regularly sells her work at Altrincham Market.
