The developer behind the Altair development may have forced one tyre chain to close – but it has stepped in to ensure the long-term future of another.
The site of Nikal’s £70m scheme – work on which is due to begin in early 2015 – will require the demolition of ATS Euromaster on Oakfield Road.
The business, which is now subject to a compulsory purchase order, has rejected the offer of a move to another site in either Timperley, Broadheath or Sale and is now in the process of agreeing compensation terms with Trafford Council.
But on the other side of the scheme, also on Oakfield Road, Nikal has secured the future of the National Tyre Service depot.
It has paid an undisclosed sum to Watergate Properties to acquire the property – and has agreed a 20-year lease with the tyre chain, securing its long-term future.
Adam Bennett, Nikal’s facilities manager, said: “The purchase of the NTS on Oakfield Road was an important purchase for us. It reinforces our belief in Altrincham ahead of starting the first phase of Altair in 2015. The lease for NTS was due to expire in 2016 and we were concerned that this facility would be lost.”
He added: “With our aspirations to regenerate this part of Altrincham, we want a balance of uses and whilst the ATS, on the corner of Moss Lane and Oakfield Road, had to be acquired for the purpose of Altair we didn’t want to lose another amenity and local employer.
“We have agreed a new 20-year lease with NTS that should ensure its future for years to come.”
