A budget gym chain has stepped in to take the vacant unit next to the old B&Q on the Atlantic Street Retail Park after trampoline park Jump Xtreme pulled out.
We reported last April how Jump Xtreme were planning to create 60 new jobs with the new Broadheath park – the first of its kind in Altrincham – which would also include a coffee shop.
But we can confirm that, despite having secured planning permission to begin the refurb of the site, Jump Xtreme has now pulled its plans and is looking at other sites.
That’s opened the door for The Gym Group, which has over 100 locations nationwide, to open a new gym in Units 2 and 3 of the Atlantic Street site. The 80,000 sq ft retail park, up until recently also the home of B&Q, was last year bought for £14m by SUI Generis Investments.
The 20,000 sq ft gym will create between 15 and 20 new jobs, and the company has begun recruiting already ahead of a June 2017 launch.
Sam Brookes, who will be general manager of the new gym, said: “We’re very much looking forward to opening in Altrincham. We pride ourselves on our customer service and I think people are going to be shocked at what they can get for their money.”
The Gym Group Altrincham is launching with an opening offer of £10.99 a month with no joining fee. The monthly payment will rise to around £15 after 12 months, and there are no contracts.
Equipment inside the gym will include three indoor virtual bikes, 14 exercise bikes, 24 running machines, 14 cross trainers, six rowing machines, 80 strength training machines and two climbmills.
There will also be classes which can be booked online.
The Gym Group, founded by former England squash player John Treharne in 2008, has grown rapidly and turned over £60m in the 12 months to the end of 2015, up from £20.4m in 2013.
