Spring is finally here, bringing warmer soil temperatures and longer daylight hours - the perfect conditions for reviving your lawn after winter. March to early May is an ideal time to repair damage, tackle moss and encourage healthy growth, setting the stage for a lush lawn through summer.

Dealing with Post-Winter Problems

The wet winter has left many lawns looking worse for wear, with thin grass coverage, moss buildup and compacted soil. But don’t worry - these common issues can be easily remedied with a bit of care.

  • Thin Grass Coverage – Rake out debris, then over-seed with a suitable grass seed mixture, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact. Water regularly (unless rain does the job for you) and avoid sowing if frost is forecast. For extra protection, cover new shoots with a lightweight fleece to shield them from cold snaps and hungry birds.
  • Moss Ingress – Moss thrives in damp, shaded areas. Treat it with an iron-based moss control product, but remember, moss doesn’t rot away like weeds - it needs to be raked or scarified out. This can be hard work, but essential to prevent it from returning. Over-seeding is often necessary to fill in the gaps left behind.
  • Compacted Soil – Excess rain, standing water and even snow can suffocate grass roots by reducing airflow in the soil. The best way to fix this is through aeration - creating holes to relieve compaction and improve drainage. While a garden fork can be used, a powered aerator is far more effective and avoids damaging the roots. Always avoid aerating when the ground is too wet, as this can make compaction worse.

Time to Feed Your Lawn

With grass actively growing again, spring feeding is crucial for recovery and strong growth. However, avoid liquid fertilisers, which can wash away quickly in spring rain, and steer clear of high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can cause a short-term growth surge but weaken the grass afterward. Instead, opt for a slow-release granular fertiliser that provides balanced, long-lasting nutrition.
