Capture your summer adventures with Altrincham's Share Your Story

"Our first few weeks have been an amazing experience."

Since opening its doors in May, Share Your Story has quickly become Altrincham's go-to destination for anyone looking to capture and share their experiences in meaningful ways.

Located on George Street in the heart of the town centre, this innovative creative space is the brainchild of founder Simon Hepburn, who believes everyone has a story worth telling.

"Our first few weeks at Share Your Story have been an amazing experience," says Hepburn. "We have at times been overwhelmed by people sharing their stories – from outstanding photography to sad personal experiences, life-long challenges to brilliant creative works."

Inside Share Your Story on George Street

The independent creative hub has already established partnerships with local businesses, offering photobook design with Altrincham expert Inkifi and printing services with Timperley-based Love to Frame.

They've also launched new courses in social media and fiction writing, while developing their Creative Hub into a fully-equipped studio for podcasting and videography.

With summer holidays approaching, many of us are planning adventures and getaways. But as Hepburn notes, we've all been there: "We come back from time away and find it hard to recapture the experience. And when we try to share our excitement, we end up boring family and friends with a presentation of hundreds of photos."

To help you avoid the dreaded holiday photo dump, the Share Your Story team of trainers and experts have shared their top tips for making the most of your summer storytelling:

Plan Your Story Before You Go

Creative Designer Emily, who worked for many years as a freelance photographer and short filmmaker, advises thinking ahead: "Consider what you need to capture stories before you go. If you're relying on your phone, will it cope with the conditions? Do you want all family members to use it? Can you trust yourself not to be distracted when you take it out?"

Share Your Story stocks action and waterproof cameras for any adventure, drones for spectacular wide shots, robust cameras designed for children, and film cameras that encourage thoughtful composition. They can even update your passport photos while you wait.

Think Beyond Pictures

Audio Engineer Finlay, a graduate music producer and studio manager who leads the shop's podcasting support, suggests expanding your creative horizons: "Don't just think in pictures but also consider how you're going to capture your feelings, emotions and responses. How are you going to present your stories afterwards?"

Their solutions include guided journals, recording equipment for capturing ambient sounds and voice messages, and hybrid cameras that let you print and scrapbook experiences daily – perfect for keeping children engaged throughout the trip.

Learn from the Masters

Filmmaker Jon, who brings over 30 years of experience in film, TV, music videos and commercials, recommends seeking inspiration: "Take inspiration from others who've been before."

The store showcases work from local photographer Michael Swallow, including a striking shot of the Taj Mahal that takes a refreshingly different approach to one of the world's most photographed buildings. They also stock travel photography books and maintain a growing creative library for browsing.

Master the Light

Film photography and printing expert Sam suggests a more mindful approach: "Take time to experience a smaller number of new things at the right time of day. If you're visiting Rome, don't try to see the Colosseum at 2pm on a Saturday – try to get there in the early morning when the light is perfect and you'll have time to explore different ways of capturing the ancient monument."

Embrace the Bigger Picture

Creative Advisor Maya, who has a background in fashion and social media, encourages using travel for deeper reflection: "Use a holiday to explore your wider goals, feelings and intentions. It's a time when you are less anxious, less distracted and generally happier, and can link your experiences to the challenges you are facing."

When you return, you can capture these insights through scrapbooking, journalling or creative writing – all services and workshops available at Share Your Story.

Share Your Story is located at 85 George Street, Altrincham, and online at shareyourstory.uk
