The Window Company raises £8,000 in aid of rare disease battled by employee’s mum

The battle against an incurable disease fought by the mum of one of its staff proved to be the inspiration as The Window Company raised over £8,000 in a series of fund-raising events.

The ‘Wash Rock Run’ initiative encompassed a car wash, the Manchester Marathon, a concert and The Three Peaks 24-hour challenge.

It was inspired by Lesley Toft, whose son Darren works for the Sale-based company, and who suffers with a rare disease called amyloidosis.

Tragically, her husband John suffered an unexpected heart attack during Lesley’s pre-Stem Cell Transplant chemotherapy earlier this year, and the company’s fund-raising efforts for the Amyloidosis Research Fund (ARF) were in his memory.

Craig Toft, Lesley’s other son, explained: “Many have not heard of the rare disease, nor of how devastating the diagnosis is and the brutality of a Stem Cell Transplant; a treatment which leaves the body’s immune system permanently comprised.

“Mum has travelled a long very hard road and was fortunate enough to be diagnosed early. Thankfully she is now in remission.”

Earlier this month, Lesley presented the cheque on behalf of the company to Professor Sir Mark Pepys at The National Amyloidosis Centre in London.

Wayne Shaw, MD of The Window Company, added: “The whole team were ecstatic that we exceeded our target, raising £8,165,15 for The UCL Amyloidosis Research Fund. Equally important was the amount of awareness raised on the way. It remains the hope of the Window Company team that if their efforts help save just one life it will have been worth it.”
