Counselling & Family Centre celebrates golden milestone with community fun day

It will host a free Family Fun Day this Friday, 12th July.

After five decades of providing vital mental health support to the local community, the Counselling & Family Centre (CFC) is marking its 50th anniversary with a special celebration - and everyone's invited.

The Altrincham-based charity will host a free Family Fun Day on Friday 12th July from 12pm at their Stamford Park base, featuring music, games, entertainment and creative activities.

All are welcome to join what promises to be a memorable community celebration, marking not just CFC's remarkable milestone but also building bridges for the future.

From humble beginnings to community cornerstone

What began in 1975 as a modest initiative by compassionate individuals recognising Trafford's need for accessible mental health services has transformed into something extraordinary. The CFC now operates as a comprehensive wellbeing hub, supporting anyone aged five and up who needs help.

"We provide support for everybody," explained chief executive Jo Allen, who has been with the organisation for 20 years and was awarded a BEM in the recent King's Birthday Honours List. "There's no geographic limit - you don't have to have a certain post code and you don't have to have a certain issue."

Located just yards from the duck pond in Stamford Park, the centre might be easy to miss physically, but its impact on the community is unmistakable. A network of 45 highly trained specialist counsellors now provides individual, couples, family and child counselling, ensuring support is available for every stage of life.

The scope of CFC's work has evolved dramatically to meet contemporary needs.

Beyond traditional counselling, the organisation has introduced innovative wellbeing programmes addressing diverse community challenges. The "Winter Hearts" campaign tackles social isolation during colder months, while "Starting Strong" courses empower parents of children with special educational needs.

The centre currently supports a large number of young people facing serious mental health challenges, but Allen emphasises that support spans all ages and demographics.

"We see a lot of older people who are lonely. They might be financially well off, but it doesn't make them immune to problems. We see people in high-powered jobs who are only just holding together."

Accessible and inclusive support

CFC's commitment to accessibility remains unwavering. With centres in Altrincham, Bury, Broomwood and Old Trafford - plus both in-person and remote services - help is always within reach. Sessions are priced according to household income, with those earning under £30,000 paying just £10 per session.

"Having so many counsellors means we can match the most appropriate counsellor with the client," Jo added. "We'll say, what are you actually trained to do?"

The organisation also provides education and training, offering courses in mental health first aid and counselling skills that create "a ripple effect of understanding and compassion throughout Trafford and Greater Manchester".

Looking forward

As CFC celebrates its half-century, the organisation continues to expand its reach through collaborations with local schools, healthcare providers and grassroots organisations. Community initiatives like mindfulness sessions, men's support groups and community allotments demonstrate their holistic approach to mental health.

"We can help you better understand what's happening in your life," said Jo. "You will learn more about yourself, determine what your needs are, and decide what's really important to you."
