Jason Manford named CAFT President as Sir Bobby Charlton's family passes on the baton

The Salford-born comedian has been a Patron of the Altrincham-based charity since 2009.

Jason Manford has been named as the new President of the Children's Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT), the Altrincham-based charity that provides free visits for disadvantaged, disabled and terminally ill children.

The Salford-born comedian was presented with the symbolic baton at a special ceremony held at CAFT's 10-acre site at Booth Bank Farm, on the rural fringes of Altrincham.

The honour was bestowed by the family of his predecessor, the late Sir Bobby Charlton, who served as President for 23 years before his death in October 2023.

Manford is no stranger to the charity. He has been a Patron of CAFT since 2009 and has helped raise in excess of £150,000 during that time, regularly visiting the site to meet families and see the charity's work up close.

On accepting the role, he said: "It's such an honour to take on the role of President of the Children's Adventure Farm Trust. Sir Bobby Charlton was not only a sporting legend but a true champion for children and families going through unimaginably difficult times. To follow in his footsteps is something I don't take lightly.

"I've seen first-hand the magic CAFT creates, giving children the chance to laugh and simply be children. I'm immensely proud to continue supporting this remarkable charity."

Sir Bobby Charlton had served as President for 23 years

CAFT was founded in 1985 by broadcaster Tim Grundy and welcomed its first visitors to the farm in 1992. Today it welcomes nearly 20,000 children a year from schools and families across the North West and beyond, offering everything from farm animals and woodland adventures to residential stays - all completely free of charge to families whose children meet the charity's criteria.

Chief Executive Ian Eccles said: "Jason has been an unwavering supporter of CAFT for many years. He understands our charity, our families and the difference our work makes. We are absolutely delighted that he has accepted the role of President.

"Sir Bobby's legacy at CAFT is special and we know Jason will carry that legacy forward with warmth, energy and a deep commitment to the children and families we support."

CAFT relies on donations and around 400 volunteers - known as the 'CAFT crew' - to raise the £1.1 million needed each year to keep its doors open.
