Silence (15)
2017 is finally upon us and, with the beginning of every year as of late, we’re kicking things off with award season. Hurtling towards both the Golden Globe and Academy Award ceremonies, some of cinema’s seasoned greats and fresh directing talents are unveiling their latest masterpieces. First up is Hollywood legend and Mafioso enthusiast Martin Scorsese, with the critically beloved Silence.
Starring ex-Spider-Man Andrew Garfield and Star Wars’ Adam Driver, Silence tells the tale of two Catholic missionaries who must travel to 17th Century Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson). However, this was a time period where Catholicism was outlawed in the country meaning the priests don’t receive the warmest of welcomes. Spending over 20 years trying to bring this to the big screen, Scorsese’s newest release is a passionate and thoughtful one that just may stand alongside his finer work.

La La Land (12A)
There’s just nothing wrong with a good musical once in a while. No, not Mamma Mia or Rock of Ages, I mean the traditional classic Hollywood grand musicals. Whiplash director Damien Chazelle is also fondly reminiscent of this bygone era and he’s making a big song and dance about it with Oscar contender La La Land.
Set in modern day, this flick tells the tale of Mia (Emma Stone), an actress and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in Los Angeles, a city well known for crushing dreams and breaking hearts. A delightfully romantic extravaganza that is impossible to not fall in love with, La La Land will have your foot tapping throughout, even on your third or fourth viewing.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (12A)
Back in 2012, Tom Cruise had some big shoes to fill as beloved fictional bad boy Jack Reacher, a character from a popular book series from British author Lee Childs. Despite initial worries, fans and film goers alike were thrilled by Reacher as the film went on to worldwide success. So, it’s no surprise that he’s returned in sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
Cruise is back as the wandering problem-solver who finds himself embroiled in a major government conspiracy and must go to extreme lengths to clear his name. Whilst on the run as a fugitive however, Reacher uncovers a potential secret from his past that could change the vigilante detective’s life forever. If you’re after something a bit more fast-paced, it’s time to go back to the cinema to catch Reacher before he’s gone for good.

Moana (PG)
After making an international income of $7billion in a single year, it’s simple to say that 2016 was Disney’s year. From Zootropolis to The Jungle Book, the House of Mouse made sure that people came flocking to everything they had up their sleeve. December’s Moana was certainly no different, quickly becoming a favourite for families across the UK.
Based on traditional Polynesian folklore, Moana is about a young girl who longs for adventure despite being next in line for chief of her small tropical island. However, when mysterious forces begin to appear, she must answer her true calling as a sea-faring voyager. Teaming up with demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson), Moana faces monsters, magic and malicious coconuts in this fantastically vibrant feature that is a definite watch for anyone of all ages.

Split (15)
One to split opinions himself, director M Night Shyamalan has certainly had his ups and downs. Back when he set the world ablaze with still-phenomenal supernatural shocker The Sixth Sense, people anticipated eagerly what he would do next. Unfortunately, he slowly begin a bit of a downward spiral, with The Lady in the Water, The Happening and the dreadful The Last Airbender failing to impress. However, last year’s The Visit showed promising signs for the director and January’s Split seems to continue that intrigue.
A dark thriller centres around several young girls who are abducted by a mysterious assailant called Kevin, played by James McAvoy. However, once kidnapped, they discover that Kevin in fact has 24 different personalities, some of which being far more dangerous than others. Split could be a fun, suspenseful way to kick off the year, with twists and turns aplenty.
