The penalty for anyone caught littering in Trafford is to rise from £100 to £150.
Trafford Council announced the 50% rise in its on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notice fine today, and also said it would be doubling the fine for fly-tipping to £400.
The council said it had seen an increase in fly-tipping during the Covid lockdown and that “enough is enough”.
Litterers and fly-tippers have also been warned that the council’s environmental improvement team is working closely with colleagues in its CCTV control room to identify offenders.
Officers will issue on-the-spot fines to people caught dropping litter, including cigarette butts and chewing gum.
A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “Trafford Council believes it is wrong to throw litter on the floor and if we catch you, we will come down hard on you. We have taken the opportunity of increasing our fines for littering and fly-tipping and hope this will deter people from being irresponsible.
“We are passionate about ensuring our neighbourhoods are clean and attractive places to live in, and will not tolerate littering. We want to ensure Trafford remains a beautiful place and will do everything we can to ensure this.”
