It’s one of the highlights of the local calendar this weekend, with around 10,000 runners expected to compete in the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday.
Starting and finishing at Old Trafford, the event will as in previous years pass through Timperley and Altrincham.
We’ve collated all the relevant information so you can plan your day.
Where to see the runners
See the full map of the route here.
Timings
The event gets underway at 9am and will take in Trafford Wharf Road, Sale, Brooklands, Timperley, Altrincham, Urmston and Stretford. The majority of runners are likely to be coming through Altrincham between 10am and 12pm.
How to get there
Bus services will be diverted around the area with Altrincham Interchange bus stops closed from 8am to 1pm. Bus services will be using Lloyd Street, Barrington Road and Brooklands Roundabout as their start and end points.
Metrolink is the easiest way to get around the course and extra trams will run on the Altrincham line.
Adult Day Travelcards are available for £5 from on-stop ticket machines and allow unlimited travel across the tram network, so spectators can cheer on runners from a number of stops offering great vantage points of the race.
If you’re travelling with family or friends, Metrolink is offering two for one travel to and from or around the marathon.
Entertainment
There will be a good selection of entertainment around the route in Altrincham and Timperley. In Altrincham, at the 23km mark, music will be provided by Loose Change, Magic Voices, Little Belters (below) and the Wellington Street Stompers.
In Timperley, watch out for Frank Sidebottom’s Army (if you have a Frank Head, bring it, otherwise dress up in fancy dress). There’ll also be an appearance by the Rock Choir.
