Volunteers clean Altrincham for the Queen – but call on Trafford Council to stop “relying on goodwill”

Seventeen volunteers collected 53 bags of litter as Altrincham took part in the nationwide “Clean for the Queen” initiative on Saturday.

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy and intended to encourage people to tidy up for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, the local three-hour effort was led by the Our Altrincham group.

Hale Clean Team, Bowdon Litter Pickers and Sale Wombles also took part.

Kevin Parker, from Our Altrincham, said: “The amount of litter we collect is a credit to the fantastic team of volunteers who give up their time to make Altrincham a cleaner, greener and more welcoming community.”

Parker claimed that Trafford Council’s outsourcing of responsibility for litter to Amey Plc had led to an over-reliance on volunteers.

He added: “We have recently met with Amey Plc to highlight our concerns on their litter management and whilst we are happy to support their finite resources, this vicious circle of relying on the goodwill of volunteers needs to be addressed by Trafford Council.

“We have requested that Litter Enforcement officers are trialled within the region as part of an education and self-funding initiative. Amey Plc would support any action to reduce the volume of litter but Trafford Council need to take positive and proactive steps.”
