Metrolink services are set to be “severely impacted” by industrial action this Sunday, threatening disruption to the Manchester Marathon.
Around six miles of this year’s route is located in Altrincham and Timperley, with the race starting on Chester Road close to Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.
Tens of thousands of runners and spectators are expected on the day, but the Unite union has said it is now going ahead with a strike after Metrolink drivers rejected an offer of a minimum 5% pay rise over two years.
KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) – the tram operator – says it is aiming to run a limited service on Sunday, subject to driver availability, that will prioritise race participants and spectators heading to the marathon.
But trams will be much busier than normal and people are being warned to expect a queue.
Twenty-two shuttle buses are being put on, but only from Manchester Piccadilly Gardens and Peel Park and Ride at Event City.
TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “If you are heading out, on public transport or in the car, please plan ahead and allow extra time. Roads and services will be busier, particularly in Trafford, Salford and Manchester city centre, and delays are expected.
“We’re working closely with organisers and operators to help keep people moving, but whether going to an event or not, the main thing people can do to ensure their journey is as smooth as possible, is to check and plan in advance.”
