The former YWCA building on Ashley Road in Altrincham has finally been snapped up and will be converted into apartments.

The 0.88 acre site is in a prime location on the corner of Ashley Road and St John’s Road, but has become an eyesore after years of vandalism and neglect.

But Alexandra House now been bought by Manchester-based Real Estate Development Partnerships after previous owner, Great Places Housing, deemed it surplus to requirements.

The current five-storey building was the former home of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) hostel, although it has been boarded up for several years.

The development lies within the Downs conservation area and Manchester architects, Ollier Smurthwaite, are preparing designs for a residential scheme that will be in keeping with the area, which includes the St John the Evangelist church opposite.

Plans are expected to be submitted to Trafford Council within the next few weeks after a period of public consultation.
