Marks & Spencer has said it is “delighted” with the new-look paving outside its Altrincham store as the public realm work to improve the town centre continues.

The area of George Street in front of the store is now complete, using the same rectangular Yorkstone paving – complemented by segmental arches – used in the transformation of Goose Green.

The pedestrianised top of Cross Street is also now finished, and a programme of tree-planting on Shaws Road and Cross Street will complete the scheme.

The works were held up by the unexpected discovery of a sink hole on George Street, but the necessary remedial work has now been carried out by United Utilities, allowing work to continue as planned.

On Shaw’s Road, dig excavation has been completed to the pedestrianised areas and work is now moving on to the roadway adjacent to the market.

Stewart Smith, store manager at Marks & Spencer Altrincham, said: “We are delighted with the look of the new paving on George Street.

“The contractors have worked hard to keep the store accessible throughout the works, and we look forward to our customers and the local community enjoying the benefit of the George Street improvements.”

Councillor Michael Young, Executive Councillor for Economic Growth and Planning and Altrincham Forward board member, added: “As each phase of the public realm work is completed we get a clearer picture of just how impressive Altrincham will look once the full scheme is installed.

“The materials are of excellent quality and the arched design looks superb. The contractors are doing a good job of keeping to time and although there has been some inevitable disruption, we are confident that any short term inconvenience will be well worth the long term benefit to the town as a whole.”
