Altrincham is up for a number of awards in this year’s North West in Bloom competition.
Although the exact details of the awards will not be revealed until the ceremony in October, representatives from the town have been invited to attend to receive an award within the ‘large town’ category.
Three commercial entrants – the Stamford Quarter, The Old Roebuck and The Wheatsheaf – have also been notified that they will receive an award on the night.
Work in the Stamford Quarter area has been led by a team including volunteer Keith Somerville and community group G-Force, with the latter also working with the Old Roebuck pub on Victoria Street. The Wheatsheaf has tended its own hanging baskets.
The news is more recognition for the Altrincham in Bloom volunteers, who last year claimed a Gold Award for the town in the competition and two additional awards for community involvement.
Sarah Walmsley, one of the campaign coordinators, said the awards represented a “tremendously successful” year for the town.
“We’re really pleased – when the town looks wonderful and beautiful it’s a real draw for the town, but apart from anything else it makes it a nicer place for all of us who live here,” she said.
Walmsley said this year had seen many more businesses become actively involved in looking after the town’s planters and other green areas, and that the award-winning commercial trio were a result of this.
She added: “We have moved significantly forward in involving businesses in the campaign this year and these three businesses have entered as a result. It’s crucial to have commercial entrants, as it shows other business that things can be done.”
Walmsley, who is hoping for a separate entry from Timperley next year, added that there were two further Altrincham winners in the forthcoming RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood awards: Friends of John Leigh Park and Friends of King George V Pool.
