Family subjected to “terrible” ordeal by masked gang at Bowdon home

A pensioner and his family were subjected to a terrifying robbery at their Bowdon home by a gang of masked men wielding axes.

A pensioner and his family were subjected to a terrifying robbery at their Bowdon home by a gang of masked men wielding axes.

Four men broke down the back door of a house on South Downs Road just before 8.45pm on Tuesday September 15.

The gang forced the 73-year-old victim to lie on the floor as they held an axe over his head and hand over his blue Toy watch, worth just £200.

His wife ran to take refuge in a downstairs bathroom, but one of the gang grabbed and held her in a headlock as she begged for help.

The couple’s 23-year-old daughter was upstairs when the attack happened, and ran to help after hearing her mother’s screams.

The four men eventually fled the house through the back door.

PC Martin Hill, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “This is a terrible incident that has left the family in a huge amount of shock and distress, to the point where they thought they were going to lose their lives.

“I would like to ask that anybody with information about this violent act, no matter how small or insignificant you think it may be, to please contact the police.”

Anybody with information should contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
