A pensioner managed to escape a blaze in her Timperley flat last night after being alerted by her son.

Firefighters were called to the incident, above Washdays washing machine shop on Woodhouse Lane East, at 9.36pm.

Three engines from Sale, Altrincham and Wythenshawe attended and firefighters used breathing apparatus and two hose reels to put out the fire. They were at the scene for two hours.

The first-floor lounge of the flat – which is opposite Heyes Lane Primary School – has been gutted and many of the fire-damaged possessions from the property lay strewn on the pavement outside this morning.

A local resident told us that the woman’s son, who had been visiting, noticed the fire taking hold in the lounge and managed to wake his mother and help her out of the flat.
