The company in charge of a road-widening project on Manchester Road has apologised for the “frustrations” a new one-lane system has caused Altrincham drivers.
Amey, which last year won a £235m contract to deliver a range of services for Trafford Council under an outsourcing partnership, is handling a £2m road-widening project at the A56 junction of Park Road and Manchester Road.
The resultant roadworks have already caused months of traffic delays for motorists.
Over the weekend, however, Altrincham-bound traffic at the junction suddenly found that the two-lane system had become one, creating a bottleneck that has caused rush-hour chaos ever since.
Amey says the new system will be in place for a further eight weeks, but have promised “improved journey times” once the roadworks are complete – and has also pledged to improve signage in the area.
A spokesperson for OneTrafford, the name for the Council and Amey’s partnership, said: “We apologise for any frustrations the temporary traffic management system on the A56 is causing and any confusion it has led to. We would like to reassure motorists that we have arranged for additional signage to be in place to make the new road markings clearer to navigate.
“The temporary traffic management system will be in place for a further eight weeks with the works due to end in July 2016.
“Widening this stretch of road is part of a £2m investment to improve one of the city’s vital transport routes. We hope that once complete, motorists will see the benefits of reduced congestion and improved journey times.”
