Wellington School’s annual 10-mile sponsored walk – when over 1,300 students took to the streets of Altrincham and Timperley in February – raised an incredible £41,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.
The school chose the Trust this year following the first-hand experiences of Year 13 student, Laura, who has undergone treatment after being diagnosed with cancer. Boxing world champion Anthony Crolla helped launch the school’s walk.
Overall, the school has now raised over £300,000 for local charities during the annual event’s 19-year history.
The total was bolstered by an additional £2,300 from headteacher Stuart Beeley, who took the plunge with North West Skydive in Lancaster.
He said: “Year after year our students, parents and the local community dig deep to make this event a success so I felt like I should also go that extra mile. Quite how that extra mile turned out to be hurtling towards earth at 130mph is another story!”
Sabina Ruta, Teenage Cancer Trust Regional Fundraiser, said: “It has been a privilege to be part of Wellington’s fantastic fundraising efforts. Staff and students alike have become engaged and passionate about Teenage Cancer Trust.
“Every penny raised from the walk will help us to support teenagers and young adults facing a diagnosis of cancer. We have come so far in our mission to help young people suffering from this devastating disease.
“There is, however, still much more to do and for every young person we help, there is another we can’t, which is why we are so very grateful to everyone who was involved in the Wellington School walk.”
