Altrincham schools net a place in county tennis final

St Ambrose College’s tennis players are to face local rivals Altrincham Grammar School in the Cheshire final of the Aegon National Schools Cup.

St Ambrose College’s tennis players are to face local rivals Altrincham Grammar School in the Cheshire final of the Aegon National Schools Cup.

It is the first year the Hale Barns school has entered the competition – with teams competing from Year 7 up to 10 – and St Ambrose’s senior team won through to the final with wins against Lymm High School, The Grange and Altrincham Boys’ Grammar B team.

The Year 10 team has only lost one set en route to the final.

St Ambrose tennis coach Alex Evans said: “Though we play our matches out of Hale Barns Tennis Club, where there are sand based artificial turf courts, we now see up to 30 boys practising week in week out on our own crumb based artificial turf courts and the sport is getting more and more popular week by week.”

Evans added: “We are very grateful to Hale Barns for their support and to their coach Dave Boucher, who is working with the team, though Peter in particular has his own coaching regime developed with his club and the national elite system.”
