Work is due to start on a major new residential housing development off The Downs in Altrincham after a planning application was approved by Trafford Council.

Work is due to start on a major new residential housing development off The Downs in Altrincham after a planning application was approved by Trafford Council.

The L-shaped 10-home development – to include four three-bedroom townhouses and six two-bedroom apartments – will be located to the rear of 16-24 The Downs.

It will also feature an underground, 32-space car park, to be accessed from The Downs between numbers 18 and 20.

The single-storey shop currently at number 18 will be demolished as part of the plans, but tenants Black & White, the clothes shop, will be moving next door to the unit currently occupied by the FAB patisserie. A storage building at the rear of 16 The Downs will also go.

The plans were put forward by Altrincham-based Consensus Property, and another Altrincham company, Tsiantar Architects, is behind the design.

Work is set to get underway in 2017.

The development will continue a trend of more residential space being created in the town centre in the face of greater demand for town centre living and difficult trading conditions for some retailers.

Permission has already been granted separately for much of the shops, office and leisure units fronting on to The Downs between numbers 16 and 24 to be converted into apartments.
