Altrincham restaurant Sugo has picked up an incredible FOUR nominations in the Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards.
The Shaw’s Road pasta kitchen, which doesn’t celebrate its first anniversary until next month, is one of six restaurants up for the main Restaurant of the Year award.
It faces competition from city centre big-hitters Hawksmoor and El Gato Negro, Northern Quarter venue Evelyn’s, Didsbury eaterie Volta and Levanter in Ramsbottom.
And it’s also up for Casual Restaurant, Newcomer and Neighbourhood Restaurant of the Year.
Co-owner Alex De Martiis told us: “It’s fantastic. We’re absolutely delighted with how it has gone. It was always meant to be about the quality of the food, and barring a couple of hiccups, we’ve managed to stick to our principles and make a business out of it.”
Alex, brother Michael and Jonny Marcogliese launched Sugo in July 2015, with Alex and Jonny having met while working together at Honest Crust in Market House. Front of house manager Anthony Cardon has also been around since the start.
Based on TripAdvisor reviews, it’s already Altrincham’s number one restaurant, but despite setting up a sister sandwich bar earlier this year, Alex said that a second Sugo restaurant was still at least a year off.
“The idea was to be owner-led and we are there all the time, and that’s had a lot to do with how we maintain standards. We want to do at least another year as we are, getting even better and perfecting what we have here.
“Most of our customers we know by first name, they trust us to order for them. The food we’re making goes hand in hand with the family-type restaurant we wanted to create.”
Other Altrincham venues to pick up nominations in the awards – with the winners announced in October – include Honest Crust for Cheap Eats Venue Of The Year and Altrincham Market for Best Food and Drink Retailer.
