A Timperley teenager will achieve her dream this week when she flies to America on a football scholarship.
Mia Walters, 18, has secured a prized place at a university in Louisiana.
The former Altrincham College of Arts student has already chalked up an impressive youth career at Manchester United’s Centre of Excellence, Everton Ladies and, most recently, Crewe Alexandra.
She leaves on Wednesday and says she was inspired by the film Bend It Like Beckham.
“I’m really excited, I’ve been wanting to do it since primary school,” she said. “I love Bend It Like Beckham and I’ve always wanted to go to America and do what she did, and I can’t believe I’m actually doing it. Women’s football is massive over there, much bigger than here.”
Mia, who has had to follow an intense, four-hours-a-day training program in the weeks before leaving, says she hopes to turn professional after her four-year course.
