Timperley Sports Club has been awarded a grant of just over £72,000 from Sport England to install a completely new cricket square at its Stockport Road ground.
The Sports Club is home to Timperley Cricket Club, who last year achieved promotion into the Cheshire Cricket Premier League for the first time.
The work will commence almost immediately to re-lay the square, which will be ready in time for the club’s 140th anniversary in 2017.
The project also includes new outfield drainage that will see improved playing surfaces for Timperley Lacrosse Club and Timperley FC, who are also members of the club. It will mean that more matches can escape the bad weather and enable greater usage of the clubs facilities through the winter season in particular.
Cricket chair, Bob Page, said: “This season has been important to consolidate our 1st and 2nd team in the top flight and the new wicket should help attract more top class players to the club in 2017. It’s a great step forward.”
Timperley Sports Club membership has now grown to over 900, and it’s also a base for community classes including tai chi, salsa, yoga and Weightwatchers, as well as other organised clubs and societies.
