After nine long years of disuse, the refurbishment of the former McDonald’s restaurant on Stamford New Road has finally begun.
Workmen have moved on to the site – one of the most infamous eyesores in the town centre – to begin a 20-week programme of improvements.
As revealed on Altrincham Today earlier this year, Stamford Quarter owner Lunar had submitted an application to bring the condemned site back into use, work that would likely require an investment in the several hundreds of thousands.
But the actual arrival of the workmen on site marks a genuine line in the sand for the continuing regeneration of the town centre.
The former McDonald’s restaurant, which stood on the corner of Cross Street and Stamford New Road for 23 years before closing in 2007, has come to be a symbol of ‘old’ Altrincham, when vacant units dominated and there was a general air of degeneration.
But owner Lunar is keen to make a real statement of intent with the site, both with the refurb and the next tenant. It’s understood that the 2,315 sq ft site – currently advertised for rent with property consultant Barker Proudlove – is attracting a considerable amount of interest.
