Police make arrest after “jet-washing” workmen steal elderly man’s life savings

Police have arrested a man who posed as a workman and then stole the life savings of an elderly man in Altrincham last month.

The arrested man is thought to be one of three fraudsters who were operating in the Altrincham area.

In one particularly distressing incident that took place between Friday 13th and Monday 16th January, the bogus workmen – who were travelling in a distinctive white transit van with roof rack and orange stripes – offered to jet-wash an elderly man’s drive.

After charging what was described as an “extortionate” amount of money for their services, the men then carried out a burglary, stealing what was described at the time as a “large amount of life savings”.

Police said today that with the help of information received from the man’s neighbours, an offender has been identified and arrested in the Staffordshire area.

A spokesperson for GMP Trafford South said: “Thank you to all our followers who shared the post and rang the station with information. It is great to witness the community supporting each other which resulted in a great arrest!

“You can run (to another county) but you can’t hide!”
