Bowdon’s Borage is only Altrincham restaurant to win listing in Michelin Guide

A Bowdon restaurant that has only been open for six months is the only Altrincham restaurant to win a prestigious listing in the Michelin Guide 2018.

Borage is a first restaurant venture for Veronika Janusova and Mariusz Dobies

A Bowdon restaurant that has only been open for six months is the only one in Altrincham to win a prestigious listing in the Michelin Guide 2018.

Polish pair Mariusz Dobies – the former executive chef at Michael Caines in Manchester – and Veronika Janusova teamed up to open Borage, named after the Mediterranean herb, on Vicarage Lane in April.

At the time they promised to deliver fine dining – and they have certainly been vindicated with a listing in the just-announced new edition of the restaurant bible.

The Guide’s inspectors described Borage as “an airy neighbourhood restaurant in a pleasant village. Well-presented, colourful European dishes showcase Polish ingredients and are full of flavour. The homemade breads are a highlight, as is the chocolate mousse.”

The listing went on to praise the restaurant for its “fresh ingredients, capably prepared: simply a good meal”.

No other Altrincham restaurants make the Guide – the nearest to be included are Hispi in Chorlton and the Church Inn in Mobberley.

Borage was also awarded a cooking score of two knives and forks, or couverts, equating to a “good standard” of dining experience.

Borage’s co-owner Mariusz Dobies said: “It is a very good start for Borage, it has only been six months and we have managed to get recognized and listed by the best food guide in the world. Two knives and forks is good cooking score… we have only just begun!”
